Good to see you here again!
As a regular player of Free Fire, I recently found myself curious about the origins of this remarkable game. During a match a few days ago, the question came to mind:
How did Free Fire come to be, and who’s behind the company that completely transformed the gaming industry?
If you’ve had similar thoughts, you’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ll explore how Free Fire was created and how Garena, the team behind it, became a major force in the gaming world.
Let’s dive in and uncover the story together!
To satisfy my curiosity, I decided to dig into the history of Free Fire and the company behind it, Garena. During my research, I discovered some really interesting facts that I will share in this guide, including tips on how to play Free Fire effectively for beginners and advanced players alike.
Let’s dive deeper and explore more about how this game made its mark on the world!
Birth of Free Fire
Free Fire is one of the most popular mobile battle royale games available today, developed and published by Garena for both Android and iOS. It was first launched on December 8, 2017, and quickly became a global hit, especially in the mobile gaming community.
By 2019, it had earned the title of the most downloaded mobile game worldwide that surpassed $1 billion in revenue.
Free Fire’s success didn’t stop there—it continued to grow, amassing over 150 million daily active users by 2021. Its mix of fast-paced action and easy accessibility has made it a fan favorite around the globe, securing its place as a top mobile game.
Pretty amazing, right?
Tournaments (5.4 Million Peak Live Viewers)
As a big fan of Free Fire, I love the excitement of its tournaments. When the Free Fire World Series (FFWS) started in 2019, it changed everything for players and fans alike. In 2020, we saw some changes due to the pandemic, and Garena introduced the Free Fire Continental Series (FFCS) instead. But in 2021, they brought back the FFWS with a huge prize pool of $2 million!
That year was amazing because the FFWS became the most-watched eSports event ever, with over 5.4 million peak live viewers according to the Esport Chart—way more than the 2022 League of Legends World Championship! This shows how popular Free Fire has become in the gaming world.
Regional tournaments also keep the excitement going. The EMEA Invitational featured 12 teams competing for a $200,000 prize, while the Free Fire Asia Championship had 31 teams from different countries fighting for $400,000. Brazil’s Liga Brasileira de Free Fire (LBFF) is another big event, with three divisions that showcase the best players in the country.
These tournaments bring everyone together, whether you’re playing, cheering, or just watching.
Gameplay
Now, this is my favorite section—let’s talk about the gameplay of Free Fire!
I’m always thrilled by the fast-paced gameplay that keeps me on my toes! Every match is full of action, where quick thinking and teamwork can lead to victory.
Let’s take a closer look at what makes Free Fire’s gameplay so fun and engaging for everyone!
In the game, you control a character from a third-person view, making it easy to see your surroundings. You can shoot, throw items, jump, crawl, and even lie down to dodge attacks.
Plus, the “Gloo Wall” grenade is a cool feature that lets you create cover to protect yourself from damage. It all adds up to an exciting experience every time you play!
Popular Game Modes
Now that we’ve talked about gameplay, let’s jump into the game modes that keep me hooked in Free Fire!
Free Fire features over 15 game modes, including classics like Team Deathmatch, Clash Squad, and special event modes like Zombie Hunt and Rampage. However, the standout modes that keep me coming back for more are Battle Royale, Clash Squad, and Lone Wolf.
Classic Mode is where my battle royale journey begins. Up to 52 players drop onto an island, and the adrenaline kicks in as we scavenge for weapons and gear. I love the thrill of strategizing with my squad or going solo to outsmart opponents. With six different maps like Bermuda and Kalahari, each game feels fresh, and the pressure of Ranked Mode really adds to the excitement.
Then there’s Clash Squad, which is one of my favorites for quick matches. It’s a 4v4 format where I can buy weapons and gear at the start of each round, making strategy key. Every round is intense, and I’ve had some unforgettable moments as we fight to eliminate the opposing team. It’s played in a best-of-seven format, so teamwork really shines here!
I can’t forget Lone Wolf, a mode that really tests my skills. This 1v1 showdown is perfect for those moments when I want to challenge myself. I can even team up with a friend in a duo format. Each round allows us to choose our equipment, making it a strategic battle to the finish. The final round is always the most thrilling, as we can pick any weapon we want, leading to some epic encounters!
These game modes add so much depth and excitement to Free Fire, and I can’t get enough of them!
Collaborations
One of the things I absolutely love about Free Fire is its incredible character system. With over 50 characters to choose from, each one has its own unique abilities that can really change how you play the game.
For instance, I often play as Chrono, who is inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo. Not only does he look cool, but his skills can really help turn the tide of a match. It’s so much fun to feel like a superstar on the battlefield while using a character that represents one of my favorite athletes!
Then there are characters like Dimitri and Thiva, who are based on the DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. I’ve tried them out too, and their skills add a fresh twist to my gameplay, especially when I’m in the heat of a close match. A-Patroa, inspired by Anitta, brings a vibrant energy to the game, while Alok, based on the DJ Alok, has some fantastic abilities that can save you in tight situations. And let’s not forget JBeibs!
Each character not only has unique skills but also a fascinating backstory that adds a layer of depth. It’s always exciting to unlock new characters using in-game currency, and I love working towards getting them all. These collaborations make Free Fire feel lively and personal, and I can’t wait to see who they’ll introduce next!
I’ve had a great time using the Free Fire Advance Servers to test out new features before they officially launch. It’s exciting to explore new characters and abilities ahead of everyone else! Trying them out in real matches gives me a better idea of how they’ll fit into the game.

Free Fire Max
Now that we’re wrapping up today’s guide, I want to take a moment to highlight Free Fire Max. This upgraded version of Free Fire, released in 2021, offers a fresh experience that I really enjoy. The high-definition graphics are impressive and make the game look incredible. The improved sound effects add another layer of excitement, making each match feel more intense.
One feature I love is the 360-degree rotatable lobby, which lets you explore and appreciate the game’s details from every angle. If you already play Free Fire, you’ll be happy to know that you can use the same account for Free Fire Max. All your costumes and items sync perfectly between both games.
Thanks to FireLink technology, players from Free Fire and Free Fire Max can team up, which is a fantastic way to keep the fun going. Even when Free Fire faced bans in certain regions, Free Fire Max stayed available, so the adventure continues!

Controversies
While researching for this article, I found out that Free Fire has faced some controversies along the way.
One major issue happened in January 2022 when Krafton, the company that makes PUBG, sued Garena, the developer of Free Fire. They claimed that Free Fire and its upgraded version copied a lot of ideas from PUBG, including game mechanics, items, and the overall design. Krafton specifically mentioned things like the “air drop” feature, how the game is structured, and even the colors and textures used in the game.
Another big controversy occurred on February 14, 2022, when India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology decided to ban Free Fire along with 53 other apps. This was due to concerns about privacy and security, as they believed these apps posed a risk to users.
Even with these challenges, Free Fire has managed to keep a strong player community, showing that the game remains popular despite the bumps in the road.
